For those interested in a hairstyle ideal for swing dancing, we'll cut right to the chase. This style can be parted either on the side or in the center. Either way, the look is always soft and flowing, perfect for fast-action, energetic dancing.

Your hair should be shoulder length or slightly shorter for this style. This was a very popular 'do in the early to mid part of the 1940s. (By the way, the lovely ladies in the above photograph are June Haver, Vivian Blaine and Vera-Ellen from the 1946 film, "Three Little Girls in Blue.") Starting with clean, dry hair, decide where you would like the part.

The set is done around the perimeter of the head, leaving the crown and top straight and smooth. Choose either hot rollers or curling irons (medium to small), whichever you are the most comfortable using. Allow them to heat adequately. Section off the hair by parting it from the top of the crown to the ear. Do this on both sides of the head to give you one large section of hair in the back of the head.

Next, take that section and divide it horizontally in two low sections across the back of the head, and pin the top section out of the way. The bottom section is where you will place your rollers first. Do this with vertical sections approximately the same size as the roller size that you have chosen. Spray this section with spray gel, comb it smooth and place your roller in, with the hair smoothly wrapped around the roller. Secure with a roller clamp. The roller should rest against the head vertically, with all the rollers going in the same direction.

Repeat across the back of the head until this first bottom section is complete. Unpin the top section and repeat the same process, but this time with the rollers going in the opposite direction. The front is next. The length of your hair will determine the look for this part of the style. If you have bangs, you may choose to make them curly using small rollers.

If the front hair is longer, you may choose to curl just the longer sides, leaving the front area smooth. The sides of the head are set the same as the back, with the exception of creating one section instead of two. Allow hot rollers to cool completely before removing.

Once removed, brush the smooth areas and comb gently the curled areas. Be careful not to over-comb, or you may get frizz. Once you have the hair placed where you want it, lightly spray with light hold hair spray. Tip: The size of the roller or curling iron will determine the tightness or looseness of your curl.

Don't forget to spray each section with spray gel before you roll it, as this will give support to your set and make it last. Use barrettes or hair ties as shown in the variations on the upper right.
